Freeview TV

Introduction

TVs with integrated Freeview tuners are available. If you are purchasing a new TV it may be worth considering a Freeview compatible TV. If your current TV does not need replacing you should consider getting a set to box (unless you also want an excuse for a nice flat screen!).

Advantages

The advantages of using a TV with an integrated Freeview receiver (instead of a set top box) include:

  • Only 1 thing to turn on/off.
  • Only 1 remote control required to watch digital TV.
  • Less boxes in your living room.

Disadvantages

There are a few disadvantages also. Consider the following:

  • Cost. It is common for a digital model to be significantly more expensive than the analogue only equivalent.
  • You are stuck with the Freeview receiver provided in your TV. If you want to upgrade, you'll need to buy an external receiver or replace your TV.
  • You usually can't record digital TV to your VCR and watch something different at the same time.

Things to Think About

A good solution may be to purchase a Freeview PVR or Freeview DVD Recorder as well as a Freview TV. This would allow you to watch and record Freeview programmes.
