HDTV Antennas

You What?

What is an HDTV antenna? What makes it special? Absolutely nothing!.

Yes - I'm not barking mad. There is nothing special about an HDTV antenna. It is a pointy metal thing - just like any other TV antenna.

The Hype

"HDTV optimised antennas" are just hype. Terrestrial HDTV is just the same as analogue television. It's just digital. The same radio waves carry the signal, it is just that that signal contains digital information instead of analogue information. An antenna that is good for analogue is also good for digital and vice versa.

Choosing an antenna to receive HDTV

If you haven't got an antenna there are some things you need to know when choosing one:

  • The frequency range of the antenna - check that this matches the frequency range of your broadcasts (for example UHF or VHF).
  • The gain of the antenna (a larger gain will receive weaker signals).
  • Outdoor antennas will always perform better than indoor ones. If possible always use an outdoor antenna.
